Dana Point Home Gets Luxury Makeover
Dana Point home gets luxury makeover with bold, bohemian design and perfect paint choice for a unique space.

Designer Elspeth Keller renovated a primary suite in Dana Point, transforming an original 1968 bedroom and awkward bath into a bold, bohemian space. The project began with a search for the perfect paint, which led Keller to Benjamin Moore’s Mexican Tile, but it was Portola Paints that could deliver the desired soft, chalky texture.
Keller’s clients are described as brave and jet-setting, and the renovation aimed to reflect their personality. The designer reclaimed 146 square feet from an adjacent room, allowing for a larger bathroom and an expansive walk-in closet.
The additional space enabled Keller to reconfigure the room, creating a more functional and relaxing environment. With the functionality solved, the focus shifted to setting the mood, which was achieved through the use of custom limewash. According to Keller, this creates a portal into a space that feels “moody and relaxed,” much like the design equivalent of golden hour.

Artwork by Kristin Giorgi hangs above the bed, layered with pillows from Linen & Cloth and flanked by woven nightstands from The Citizenry and green marble pendants from CB2. The teal green in the lights and rug complements the enveloping terra-cotta, notes the designer.
A triangular desk from Pottery Barn was sourced for a compact corner, providing a clever and almost vintage piece that tucks neatly into the room’s tight footprint. This addition has helped to transform the once-awkward suite into a destination.
Entering the bathroom, the eye is immediately drawn to the large vanity under a statement arch. An original architectural skylight floods the bathroom with natural light, illuminating the Dolomite stone countertop. The Dolomite is echoed in an arched shower niche, creating a sense of continuity.

The star and cross tile is interpreted in two ways: terracotta on the floor and again in white on the shower walls and vanity backsplash. This design choice helps to tie the space together, creating a sense of cohesion. As Keller notes, what was once a primary bedroom and primary bathroom now truly feel like a primary suite.
The renovation has not only improved the functionality of the space but also created a unique and relaxing environment. By thinking outside the box and incorporating custom elements, Keller has designed a space that reflects her clients’ personality and provides a serene retreat.
Keller’s use of bold colors, unique textures, and custom elements has created a bohemian oasis in the heart of Dana Point.
