Mosley Thorold has finished a major renovation of a traditional Victorian home, turning it into a textured and light-filled retreat. The project, located at De Beauvoir Townhouse, reimagines the structure as a refined sanctuary that balances old architecture with modern craftsmanship.
Redesigning circulation and space
Before the renovation, the interior flow was disjointed. A poorly positioned staircase at the entrance disrupted the home’s overall movement. The design team addressed this by removing an obstructive study and moving the stairwell to its new footprint. This change created a void that brings natural light into the darkest part of the plan.

The new staircase serves as the central element of the spatial journey. It creates a striking visual connection from the entrance hall through a grand sash window, framing views to the garden. This focal adaptation reveals a sequence of discoveries, from the double height window to a top-lit corridor and finally the transition to the lower ground extension.
The lower ground floor features strategic level changes. By lowering the kitchen, dining and reading nook by six hundred millimetres, the ceiling height was dramatically raised. This adjustment improved zoning flow and strengthened the connection to the garden. The kitchen now serves as the nucleus of the home for entertaining. A custom dining table produced by Mosley Thorold designed personally with the client as an object that would ‘offer an adopt’ to its guests, and its connection to the surrounding living spaces, makes it an obvious place for hosting.
Extending beyond the interior, the lowered patio creates a smooth transition between inside and outside through wide glazed panel doors.

Materials and sustainability
Light plays an important role as a sculptural and atmospheric element, curating a space for much needed sanctuary. Diffused top lighting accentuates the natural textures of the materials to enhance the home’s tranquil atmosphere.
The improved circulation, subtle level changes, intentional material contrasts, and strategic skylights define the spaces without interrupting the flow.
