Noble Architecture’s transformation of a previously underutilized outdoor space has resulted in a lively Modern Mediterranean garden, tailored to Australia’s climate and optimized for its north-facing orientation. This revamped courtyard now boasts distinct areas for relaxation, entertainment, and enjoyment throughout the year, with every aspect of the design, including reclaimed paving, curved walls, and low-carbon materials, contributing to a reimagined experience.
Expanding the Courtyard’s Potential
Despite the site’s unchanged boundaries, the courtyard’s perceived size has increased significantly. The strategic placement of reclaimed pavers at a 45-degree diagonal creates a sense of width, while also giving new life to existing materials. The introduction of Australian native plants alongside Mediterranean-inspired elements adds a touch of softness and color to the surrounding paving.
The mature trees and established hedges continue to provide privacy, shaping the courtyard into a series of outdoor zones for socializing, dining, and unwinding. The gentle, rendered walls guide visitors through the space, promoting a sense of fluid movement and introducing a softer architectural aesthetic. This thoughtful design leads visitors naturally to the built-in seating areas, creating a sense of harmony throughout the courtyard.
A Secluded Corner for Socializing
A notable feature of the courtyard is the custom-designed banquette seating, nestled beneath the shade of the mature tree canopy. This comfortable seating area remains closely connected to the surrounding garden, with sweeping curves that create a sense of shelter without isolation. The addition of outdoor upholstery enhances the comfort of this space, making it an inviting destination for both morning and evening gatherings.

The careful restoration of an original lion-head wall fountain has once again made it a focal point within the garden, its gentle sound helping to mask background city noise and contributing to the peaceful ambiance. As visitors explore the courtyard, they will discover the beauty of repurposed vintage stone friezes incorporated into the planting beds, which reinforce the sense of history and allow older elements to coexist with contemporary additions.
Sustainable Materials and Discreet Storage
The rear section of the courtyard is dedicated to entertainment, featuring a custom barbecue niche seamlessly integrated into the paving. Long-format Lutyens bricks from Natural Brick Co. are used consistently across the benchtop and front face, creating a unified masonry feature. These bricks, made with 45 to 50 percent locally sourced hemp and solar cured to reduce embodied carbon, demonstrate a commitment to sustainability.
Concealed storage behind the brickwork discreetly hides the gas bottle, maintaining the outdoor kitchen’s functionality without visual clutter. Custom Corten steel edging separates planting areas, while climbing vines begin their ascent up stainless steel tension wires. Over time, the creeping figs and native Bower Vine will add another layer of greenery, giving the garden a more established appearance.
