Manhattan Brownstone Merges British Design, New York History

A Manhattan townhouse blends British design with New York history. London designer Sarah Brown transformed this Harlem brownstone into a quintessential English interior with a modern twist. Founded in 2017, her studio is renowned for its classically English interiors, subtly honoring the past while remaining suited to contemporary living.

The five-storey home, dating back to the late 19th century, showcases a unique blend of bold jewel tones, textural interest, and uplifting patterns. These elements complement the property’s original features, such as heavy oak and mahogany details, pier mirrors, and elaborate mantels. Layers of color, texture, and pattern create a lived-in feel, with an undeniable sense of comfort pervading each room, as if the schemes have gently evolved over many years.

A Cinematic Influence

The design draws inspiration from the Harlem-set film The Royal Tenenbaums. Wes Anderson’s eclectic and colorful aesthetic is evident in the joyful use of color and the whimsical atmosphere. The interiors feature an eclectic mix of art, sculptural suspended lights, and a playful approach to scale. Sarah notes that the film’s interiors, with their Turkish rugs and crystal chandeliers, provided a unique guiding influence, blending seamlessly with the brownstone’s architectural character.

A cohesive palette of cobalt blues, verdant greens, and warm yellows flows throughout the house. These saturated colors bring energy and warmth, creating a joyful and harmonious environment. An especially sunny yellow appears across floors, from the entranceway artwork to the guest bedroom walls, maintaining an uplifting atmosphere. The principal entertaining floor, including the parlour, kitchen, and dining room, features a more restrained palette with pale taupe walls, allowing bold upholstered pieces and textiles to stand out.

British Brands and Bespoke Pieces

The clients requested British brands, and many pieces were custom-made. Bespoke rugs from Vanderhurd and Shame Studios, and furniture from Rose Uniacke, showcase exceptional craftsmanship. Even small details, like a tailored desk skirt from Salvesen Graham, received meticulous attention. The kitchen exudes unassuming elegance with dark timber, pale cabinetry, marble worktops, and subtle accents like a blue Lacanche range cooker and green glass pendant lights.

The design team layered heirloom pieces with antiques and contemporary furniture to create a home that feels collected over time. This approach ensures every room respects the house’s heritage while feeling fresh and inviting. Powder rooms and bathrooms feature dainty prints, bedroom ceilings are wallpapered, and the main bedroom boasts a tall half-tester with matching lining and headboard, celebrating its grand proportions.
