According to Safe Kids Worldwide, about eight children ages 5 and under die each year after falling from windows, while over 3,300 suffer injuries. Prevention can be achieved through various childproofing approaches such as guards, locks, cordless blinds, and shatter-resistant film.

Essential Childproofing Tools and Products

Before starting, gather tools and products based on your chosen method. These may include cordless blinds, window safety decals, or window guards and stops. Guards are metal or plastic bars spaced less than 4 inches apart, while stops wedge into the window track to limit opening.

For sliding windows, side-track stops or keyed locks are recommended. Double-hung windows work best with stops and guards. Window screens are not designed to prevent falls, so additional measures are necessary.

Installing Guards, Stops, and Locks

Window guards and stops are affordable and easy to install. Guards cost $30–$50, while stops range from $10–$12. They must be removable for emergency egress. Modern windows often have flip locks, but these can be easily unlocked by toddlers. Keyed locks, priced $10–$20, offer better security.

Sliding window locks, costing $5–$15, fasten to the track and limit opening. Cordless blinds, ranging from $10 to $50, eliminate strangulation risks from dangling cords. Tyler Hull, a licensed contractor, emphasizes their ease of installation: “They install in under 10 minutes. No cords, no questions.”

Rearranging furniture is another simple yet effective strategy. Move cribs, dressers, and chairs away from windows to prevent climbing. Stephanie Edenburgh, CEO of Bizzie Mommy, advises: “I’ve picked up the habit of shoving any piece of furniture away from the window.”

Shatter-resistant window film, priced $80–$100 per window, strengthens panes to prevent injuries from broken glass.

After installation, test all safety features and teach older children how to use emergency-release latches. Childproofing is most effective when tailored to window type, child age, and budget. Hull concludes: “When in doubt, overprotect. Kids figure things out fast.”

Childproofing for Different Window Types

Guards install directly into the frame, blocking openings without hindering ventilation. Stops limit the sash opening, preventing children from climbing through.

Theresa Bertuzzi, chief program development officer at Tiny Hoppers, advises: “Use sliding window locks or stops to prevent the window from fully opening; ensure the locks are placed out of children’s reach.”

Casement windows, which open outward, pose unique risks. Install lever locks or restrictors to limit opening. If they use a crank, remove and store it out of reach. Bertuzzi suggests: “Apply window restrictors or remove handles when not in use to prevent children from opening windows.”

Basement egress windows require a different approach. Since they serve as emergency exits, avoid blocking them entirely. Instead, use locks that are difficult for children but easy for adults to operate. Bertuzzi explains: “Ensure egress windows have secure locks that adults can easily operate; avoid placing furniture nearby that children can climb.”

The Importance of Window Safety

Window-related accidents often occur in bedrooms and playrooms, where children sleep and play. Stephanie Edenburgh notes: “Most slips and bangs settle in bedrooms or playrooms, usually when a parent feels convinced their little one is still tucked away and out of trouble.” Older windows that open easily are particularly risky.

Parents should avoid relying on them for safety. Tyler Hull warns: “Give toddlers a climbable surface, a loose cord, and almost every emergency scenario starts right there.”
