In the southern outskirts of Macas, Ecuador, Urdiales Estudio de Arquitectura designed a unique outdoor entertaining space. The project transformed a large urban plot used for fishing and livestock into a relaxed gathering spot that combines leisure with rural activity.

The design works around an existing structure, turning a functional element into a social hub. A repurposed water reservoir tank and a sunken conversation pit are the main elements of the new pavilion.

The water reservoir tank was once used to supply water for livestock and irrigation. However, when potable water reached the area, it was no longer needed. Instead of removing it, Urdiales Estudio de Arquitectura transformed the structure into a fully functioning bar with storage, water access, and a fridge.

The tank’s weathered exterior was left untouched, preserving its natural rust and raw, textured look. A wooden pergola connects the bar to the conversation pit, creating a sheltered zone that ties everything together.

The pergola is topped with translucent polycarbonate, allowing daylight to filter through while still offering protection. Ceramic tiles with a mix of colors and patterns add visual interest to the space, giving it a more contemporary feel. Organic shapes meet geometric lines, adding visual interest and giving the space a more contemporary feel.

The conversation pit is wrapped in a timber deck, creating a lowered seating area that encourages people to gather. As the sun sets, LED lighting brings the space to life, highlighting both the seating area and the bar.
